The event of Shaqq al-Qamar that is, the splitting of the moon into two parts occurred during the time of Prophethood. Its mention appears in the opening verses of Surah Al-Qamar (Chapter 54). Its details are also recorded in numerous hadith reports. Most commentators of the Qur’an and Hadith include this among the miracles of Prophethood and attribute its occurrence to the Messenger of Allah (PBUH). However, some other scholars such as Maulana Syed Abul A’la Maududi and Maulana Amin Ahsan Islahi-consider it as one of the signs of Allah, but do not apply the established term ‘miracle’ to it. According to them, including it among the miracles of Prophethood is not correct from an academic standpoint.

Javed Ahmed Ghamidi also holds this same opinion. Accordingly, he accepts the Shaqq al-Qamar as a physical event and regards it as a manifestation of the perfect power of the Lord of all worlds. In this view, this event appeared in the time of the Prophet (PBUH) as a divine sign in support of his warning and as a means of admonition to his deniers.
