Course Overview:

This course will focus on understanding the basic principles of Islam. The lectures will focus on discussing the purpose and wisdom behind the Quranic directives. These directives will be studied in relation with our contemporary understanding of the society.  In these lectures, attention would be paid on presenting the Quranic argument for the concepts being discussed; and the students will be encouraged to question their preconceived notions about religion, the purpose of human existence and the structure of the society we live in.

Course Objectives:

The aim of the course is to ensure that the students are able to analyze and explain the basic commandments of God, and the aim of their existence in the eyes of God. By the end of the course students will be able to:
  • Academically evaluate the basic concepts in religion.
  • Understand the theoretical background of the beliefs, rites and rituals associated with religion. 
  • Highlight the significance of the directives of Islam in each of the areas stated in the outline; and evaluate their current perspectives regarding those religious directives in the light of the Quran.  
  • Compare and contrast the concepts of religion with their preconceived notions about the issues mentioned below. 
  • Compare and contrast the religious directives in each area mentioned below with the current, modern perspectives and studies in those areas. 



Delivery Methods:

This course will be taught through different methods –formal lectures, discussion forums, question-answer sessions, assignments, and independent reading. Classes will be taught using GoToMeeting.
